Have you ever wondered how many times you use Google or any other type of search engine?
Is it 5 times, 10 times, or sometimes more? Did you know that Google alone handles over 2 trillion searches annually?
Salla: The Future of E-commerce – An Easy Platform to Start Your Business
The numbers are massive. All search engines have become part of our daily lives. We use them as educational tools, marketing tools, for fun and entertainment, and also for business.
With the daily use of these different types of search engines, people have become increasingly dependent on them. This is because they are a fast and easy way to get answers to their daily queries, as well as a convenient method where search engines find information for the user and display it on the results page.
Why Are the Different Types of Search Engines Important?

People are constantly looking for relevant information on Google, and there is a huge opportunity for businesses to attract visitors to their websites. Search engines follow guidelines and have algorithms to determine the ranking of websites at the top of search results. Therefore, optimizing sites to rank well on Google is crucial for reaching a broader audience, where you can trace the customer journey for your online store.
Users perform billions of searches on Google alone to find relevant information, which opens up a massive field for businesses and online content publishers to attract people to their website for free and acquire customer handling skills. Search engines follow guidelines and have their own algorithm to determine the ranking of websites in search results.
Optimizing websites for Google and other search engines is an essential part of any website owner's effort to reach a large audience. Visitors can generate revenue for website owners either through advertisements displayed on the site or through the purchase and pricing of products.
How Do Different Types of Search Engines Work?

Different types of search engines are like complex computer programs.
Before they allow you to type a query and search the web, they have to do a lot of preparatory work so that once you click "Search," you are presented with a set of accurate and quality results that answer your question or query.
So!
What does this preparatory work done by different types of search engines involve? There are three main stages:
First stage: The process of discovering information.
Second stage: Organizing information.
Third stage: Ranking.
This is generally known in the online world as crawling, indexing, and ranking.
Different Types of Search Engines:

Search engines are classified into the following categories based on how they operate:
1. Crawler-Based Search Engines
This is a type of search engine that relies on a crawler or bot program to find and index new content. For example, Google, Yandex, and Bing build their data indexes automatically by using a piece of software to "crawl" the web and then index what they find to build their search database. It typically follows four basic steps before showing sites in the search results.
2. Human-Powered Directories
A type of search engine directory that requires people to input data as human-powered directories. This type of directory is still popular today mainly because humans create and maintain the data.
Directories involve human editors who decide where to place the site according to its category. Once a site is submitted, it is manually reviewed and added to the appropriate category or rejected for listing.
Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ are both examples of human-powered directories.
3. Hybrid Search Engines
Hybrid search engines are a type of search engine that relies on crawler-based search and manual indexing to list sites in the search results.
Examples include Google and Yahoo, which are primarily crawler-based web search engines that use human directories as secondary mechanisms.
4. Meta Search Engines
A type of search engine like Dogpile where meta-information is gathered from other search engines and directories to display its results.
5. Specialized Search Engines
Many specialized search engines are available online, including shopping, local search, domain name search, freeware, and shareware search, allowing you to find what you are looking for more easily.
The Most Famous Types of Search Engines in the World:

1. Google
Google ranked first in search with an astonishing margin of 89.53% over Bing, which holds second place.
According to statistics from Statista and Statcounter, Google dominates the market in all countries on any device (desktop, mobile, and tablet).
Why Is Google Considered One of the Most Popular Types of Search Engines?
What made Google the most popular and trusted search engine is the quality of its search results. Google uses complex algorithms to provide users with the most accurate results.
Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, came up with the idea that websites referenced by other websites are more important than others and therefore deserve a higher ranking in search results.
2. Bing
Bing was rebranded as Microsoft Bing in October 2020. It is one of the search engine types, and the best alternative search engine to Google is Microsoft Bing, holding a market share between 2.83% and 12.31%.
Bing is Microsoft's attempt to challenge Google in search, but despite their efforts, they have still been unable to convince users that their search engine can be as reliable as Google.
Their search engine market share remains consistently low, even though Bing is the default search engine on Windows PCs.
Bing originated from Microsoft's previous search engines (MSN Search, Windows Live Search, and Live Search) and, according to Wikipedia, is the 26th most visited site on the internet.
Over the years, Google's ranking algorithm has been enriched with hundreds of other factors (including machine learning assistance) and remains the most reliable way to find exactly what you are looking for on the internet.
3. Yahoo
Yahoo is one of the search engine types and one of the most famous email service providers, with its web search engine ranking third in search with an average of 1% market share.
From October 2011 to October 2015, Yahoo search was exclusively powered by Bing. In October 2015, Yahoo agreed with Google to provide search-related services, and until October 2018, Yahoo's results were powered by both Google and Bing.
Yahoo is also the default search engine for Firefox browsers in the United States (since 2014).
Yahoo's web portal is highly popular and ranks among the top 10 most visited websites on the internet (according to Wikipedia).
4. Baidu
Baidu holds a global market share between 0.68% and 11.26%.
Founded in 2000, Baidu is one of the most popular search engines in China. Its market share is constantly increasing, and according to Wikipedia, Baidu serves billions of search queries per month. It is currently ranked 6th in Wikipedia's website rankings.
Although Baidu is accessible worldwide, it is only available in Chinese.
5. Yandex
Yandex is one of the most famous search engines in Russia, holding a global market share between 0.5% and 1.16%.
According to Wikipedia, Yandex.ru is among the top 10 most popular sites on the internet, ranking 8th in the Russian language.
Yandex presents itself as a technology company that builds and packages products and smart services powered by machine learning.
According to Wikipedia, Yandex operates the largest search engine in Russia, with a market share of 65% in that country.
6. DuckDuckGo
The market share of the DuckDuckGo search engine is around 0.66%.
According to DuckDuckGo statistics, they serve over 90 million searches daily, yet their overall market share remains consistently below 0.6%.
Contrary to what most people think, DuckDuckGo does not have its own search index (like Google and Bing) but instead generates its search results using various sources.
In other words, they do not have their own data but rely on other sources (such as Yelp, Bing, Yahoo, and StackOverflow) to provide answers to users' questions.
This is a major limitation compared to Google, which has an array of algorithms to determine the best results from all available websites on the internet.
On the positive side, DuckDuckGo has a clean interface, does not track users, and is not fully loaded with ads.
7. Ask
Formerly known as Ask Jeeves, Ask.com receives about 0.42% of the search share. Ask relies on a question/answer format where most questions are answered by other users or in the form of polls.
It also has a general search function, but the returned results lack quality compared to Google or even Bing and Yahoo.
8. Ecosia
Ecosia is a Berlin-based social business founded by Christian Kroll in 2009. The main reason for creating Ecosia was to help finance tree planting and restoration projects. Hence, it is known as "the tree-planting search engine."
How does Ecosia work?
Ecosia is a partner of Bing, meaning Bing powers its search results. Ecosia makes money to support tree planting by showing ads in its search results. Every time an ad is clicked, Ecosia gets a small share. It is estimated that it takes about 45 searches to fund the planting of a single tree.
In terms of search engine market share, Ecosia's share is around 0.10%.
9. AOL
The good old famous AOL is still in the top 10 search engines with a market share close to 0.05%.
The AOL network includes many popular websites such as engadget.com, techcrunch.com, and huffingtonpost.com. On June 23, 2015, Verizon Communications acquired AOL.
10. Internet Archive
archive.org is the search engine of the Internet Archive. You can use it to see what a website looked like since 1996. It is a very useful tool if you want to trace the history of an e-commerce domain and examine how it has changed over the years.
